About Alpe d’Huez
Alpe d’Huez is a high resort based at 1860 meters, yet only has a short journey time from Grenoble Isère Airport of around 1 hour 45 minutes, along the scenic Romanche Valley. This stunning resort averages 300 sunny days each year. Many smaller resorts link to Alpe d’Huez with a modern lift system; together they boast 250km of piste to make up the Grandes Rousses ski area.
Alpe d’Huez is one of the highest resorts in Europe, resulting in significant amounts of snow each winter. Unlike many resorts in France, Alpe d’Huez has beginner slopes towards the bottom of the Grand Rousses ski area with many intermediate and advanced runs located higher up. There are a range of routes to challenge any skill level, including the longest black run in Europe; ‘La Sarenne’. The height difference from the lowest point to the glacier is over a whopping 2000 meters (1100 meters in L’Enversin d’Oz and 3323 meters at Pic Blanc). Due to the size of the area it offers a variety of slopes and distinct trails of differing grades.
There are plenty of family-friendly attractions and activities at Alpe d’Huez, which is well known for its many cultural and sporting events throughout the year. Attractions include a mesmerizing ice sculpture cave, sledging, dog sledging, ice skating, weekly concerts, and cinema and sports facilities, as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Alpe d’Huez is a popular location for free skiing and off-piste skiing, and can boast of 50k of high altitude cross-country skiing trails in panoramic alpine splendour. For those who enjoy après ski; ‘La Folie Douce’ is an amazing restaurant and bar with a great atmosphere, live entertainment and breath-taking mountain views. A short run back down the mountain provides many more venues for those who don’t want to end the party early; after the lifts close, Alpe d’Huez has many fantastic restaurants and late night bars.
